Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
