European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
